Freedom is Earned
Bringing home a Standard Poodle puppy like Sweetie is exciting, joyful, and—let’s be honest—a little chaotic. Puppies are curious by nature, and intelligent breeds like Standard Poodles are especially creative when it comes to finding trouble. Chewing shoes, sampling pillows, and testing potty boundaries are not acts of defiance; they’re simply signs of a puppy who hasn’t yet been taught what freedom looks like. At Forever Summer Standard Poodles (FSP), one of our core training philosophies is simple but powerful: freedom should be earned, not given. Puppies don’t instinctively know the rules of your home. Sweetie doesn’t understand that the couch leg isn’t a chew toy or that the living room rug isn’t a potty area. Those expectations must be taught intentionally through structure, supervision, and repetition. Why Too Much Freedom Too Soon Backfires When puppies are given unrestricted access to the home before they’re ready, they practice unwanted behaviors—pottying indoors, chewing inappropriate items, or counter surfing. Puppies learn through repetition, so every mistake practiced becomes harder to undo later. At FSP, we often remind families that management is training. Limiting Sweetie’s access to the house doesn’t slow learning—it accelerates it. Fewer opportunities to make mistakes means more opportunities to practice correct behavior. Supervision vs. Containment When Sweetie is out and about, active supervision is essential. If you can’t keep eyes on her, that’s not a failure—it’s a cue to use management tools. Crates, playpens, baby gates, and tethers allow your puppy to stay safe while learning household expectations. Crate training is especially important. A properly introduced crate becomes Sweetie’s bedroom—a place where she can relax, sleep, and feel secure. At FSP, we recommend feeding meals in the crate and placing it near family activity so puppies associate it with comfort, not isolation. Earning Freedom Gradually Freedom should be expanded in small, intentional steps. Sweetie might start with one room, then two, then supervised access to larger spaces as she demonstrates reliability with potty training and chewing. This gradual approach builds confidence on both ends. Sweetie learns what’s expected of her, and you learn to trust her decisions. The End Goal: Confidence, Not Control At FSP, our goal isn’t to micromanage puppies—it’s to raise confident, trustworthy dogs who understand how to live comfortably in a human world. When Sweetie understands boundaries, freedom becomes a reward she can enjoy responsibly. That’s when a house truly becomes home.
