Grooming Time is Bonding Time
Grooming is a fact of life for Standard Poodles, and at FSP, we believe it should start early and happen often. Sweetie may wiggle and protest at first, but calm voices, gentle handling, and praise help her learn that grooming equals quality time. Daily or near-daily sessions build tolerance and trust. Early grooming sets your puppy up for lifelong success—both at home and at the groomer. We recommend the following: 1. Comb, brush, comb- comb first to assess the situation and knock out large tangles. This first comb should take the longest and you want to see Sweetie's skin to ensure you've gotten all the way to her skin. Brush to fluff and then comb again to make it look the way you want. 2. Trim nails frequently, you do not need to finish all nails on all feet during every session. Maybe try one foot per day until both of you are confident in the process. 3. Plan a mixture of in-home grooming and professional grooming: Sweetie will need a face, feet and fanny trim every 3-4 weeks. This might not be feasible for your budget or schedule. Many of our families do FFF at home one month and then send to the professional groomer the next month. Daily combing and brushing sessions will help you keep their in check during this process. 4. Work with an awesome professional groomer: Find a groomer that you love and work with them to a create a schedule that works for all of you.
