The 5-Second Rule Every Puppy Parent Needs
If there’s one rule we wish every new puppy owner understood, it’s this: corrections only work within about five seconds. Puppies live entirely in the moment, and Sweetie is no exception. If she chewed a shoe ten minutes ago, she has absolutely no idea why you’re upset now. In our daily work at FSP, we see how much stress disappears when families understand timing. The five-second rule helps you focus on what truly matters—catching and redirecting behavior in real time. If you see Sweetie starting to potty inside, chewing something inappropriate, or pulling on the leash, that’s your teachable moment. For potty accidents, pick Sweetie up and take her immediately to her designated potty area. For chewing, calmly remove the forbidden item and replace it with an approved toy. For leash pulling, change direction and reward her when the leash loosens. Once she’s doing the right thing, praise her generously—this is where learning sticks. If you miss that five-second window, let it go. Clean up, reset, and focus on better supervision next time. At FSP, we remind families that scolding after the fact only creates confusion and can damage trust, especially in sensitive breeds like Standard Poodles. One of our favorite prevention tools is tethering. Attaching a lightweight six-foot leash to your puppy keeps Sweetie close and prevents her from wandering off to make poor choices. Training isn’t about punishment; it’s about clarity, timing, and consistency.
