Why Consistency is the Secret Sauce in Puppy Training

Sweetie is incredibly smart—like most Standard Poodles—but intelligence doesn’t equal mind reading. Puppies rely on consistency to understand what we expect from them. At FSP, we see confusion crop up anytime rules change from person to person or day to day. Consistency means everyone in the household is on the same page. If one person allows Sweetie to jump on the couch and another scolds her for it, she isn’t being stubborn—she’s unsure which rule applies. The same goes for potty training, commands, and acceptable play behavior. Commands should be uniform. If one family member says “come” and another says “here,” Sweetie may respond inconsistently—not because she’s ignoring you, but because you’re asking two different things in her mind. At FSP, we encourage families to pick clear commands and use them consistently. Standard Poodles thrive when expectations are predictable. Consistent schedules for feeding, potty breaks, play, and rest help regulate behavior and reduce anxiety. Sweetie learns faster when she can anticipate what comes next. Consistency doesn’t mean perfection—it means clarity. And clarity builds confidence, trust, and a strong lifelong bond.
